Is Plug-In Solar Safe in the UK?
Plug-in solar is now legal in the UK for systems up to 800W. Whether it is safe depends on your wiring, your socket condition, and whether you stay within the rules. This guide covers what those rules actually require.

What still needs a qualified person
Plug-in solar through an existing socket does not need a certified installer. However, any hardwired connection inside the consumer unit, work on the mains supply, or an installation intended for grid export must be carried out by a qualified electrician and notified under the appropriate regulations. If you are unsure about your existing wiring, get it checked before plugging anything in.
1. Understand the 800W legal limit
From 27 August 2026, plug-in microinverter systems up to 800VA AC output are legal in the UK when connected through a standard 13A socket. The 800W ceiling was chosen because it keeps the reverse current through a ring main socket within the limits those circuits were designed to carry, without requiring the socket or wiring to be upgraded.
Systems above 800W, or any installation that is hardwired rather than plug-in, are treated differently: they need a qualified electrician, and grid export requires MCS certification plus DNO notification (G98 for smaller installs, G99 for anything with battery export). A plug-in system under 800W does not export to the grid and sits outside the notification regime.
2. Check your socket and ring main first
Not every socket is equal. Before plugging in a microinverter, check that the socket is properly wired, in good condition, and on a ring main circuit (not a spur with undersized cable). Properties built before the 1990s may have unprotected circuits without a residual current device (RCD): this is not automatically dangerous, but it is worth having an electrician check if you are not sure.
The most common issue is a socket that is already carrying a heavy load, such as a fridge, freezer, or washing machine on the same circuit. Plug-in solar adding a small reverse current on top of a fully loaded circuit is unlikely to cause problems, but it is worth plugging into a lightly loaded socket rather than a heavily used one.
3. Know what is and is not notifiable
Plug-in solar under 800W, connected through an existing 13A socket and not exporting to the grid, is not notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. The DNO (distribution network operator) does not need to be informed because the system does not backfeed the grid: a standard plug-in microinverter will consume all its output within the household rather than pushing power into the street network.
If you want to export surplus solar to the grid and receive Smart Export Guarantee payments, that requires a different type of installation: grid-tied, MCS-certified, with a DNO application under G98 or G99 depending on the size and whether the system includes battery storage with export capability. A plug-in kit through a socket cannot do this.
4. Mount panels securely
The most common mounting options for plug-in solar in the UK are garden or patio stands, fence brackets, or balcony rail mounts. Whichever you choose, secure it so that it cannot blow over in typical UK weather: a 100W panel acts as a sail in high winds and can cause significant damage or injury if it falls.
South-facing is ideal, but south-west or south-east will still produce useful amounts. Shading from buildings, fences, or trees will noticeably reduce output, particularly if the shading falls on part of a panel rather than missing it entirely. Most plug-in kits now include a microinverter per panel, which helps limit the impact of partial shading compared to older string systems.

Do I need planning permission for plug-in solar?
Most domestic plug-in solar installations on a house or flat are permitted development and do not need planning permission, provided they are not on a listed building or in a conservation area where restrictions apply. If you are in a conservation area or an area of outstanding natural beauty, check with your local planning authority first.
Will a plug-in solar panel trip my fuse box?
A correctly installed plug-in system under 800W is very unlikely to trip a circuit breaker. The current it produces is small relative to what a 13A ring main is designed to carry. Problems are more likely if a circuit is already close to its rated capacity, or if the socket or wiring is in poor condition.
Can I get paid for exporting plug-in solar to the grid?
In practice, no. A standard plug-in inverter connected through a socket does not have the metering or DNO approval required for Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments. To export and be paid, you need an MCS-certified grid-tied installation with a dedicated generation meter and DNO notification.
