Getting Started with Plug-In Solar in the UK

Plug-in solar panels have been common in Germany and the Netherlands for years, and the UK finally follows suit: SI 2026/848 comes into force on 27 August 2026, making it legal to connect a certified small solar kit to a standard socket without planning permission. Here is what the rules actually say, what you still need to do before switching on, and what a realistic system looks like.

Important: notify your DNO before you switch on

Even a small 400W plug-in solar kit is grid-connected generation. Under the G98 standard, you must notify your Distribution Network Operator before energising it. Most DNOs accept G98 notifications online and you should receive confirmation within a few working days. Do not switch the system on before notifying: the obligation applies regardless of system size, and a plug-in solar kit under SI 2026/848 does not waive it.

1. What changed in August 2026

Before SI 2026/848, permanently connecting a microinverter to your mains ring required a qualified electrician and building control notification, in the same way as any other fixed wiring job. What changed is that a certified plug-in kit can now be connected to an existing socket by the householder, without that additional barrier. The DNO notification requirement (G98) remains in place, as does the need to use only certified kit. If you are renting, you still need your landlord's permission to alter the electrical installation.

2. Choose a certified kit, not a DIY lash-up

The key word in the regulations is "certified". Only kits bearing the relevant UK product mark meet SI 2026/848. A microinverter and a panel that you connect yourself with a three-pin plug does not qualify, even if it is under 800W, unless the complete assembled kit has been certified. Retailers of compliant kits will make this clear on the product listing. If it doesn't say certified or list SI 2026/848 compliance, assume it does not qualify.

3. The 800W limit and why it matters

The 800W ceiling is per property, not per socket. Running two separate 800W kits on different sockets does not double the allowed generation: you are limited to 800W total per household. Exceeding this limit means your system no longer falls under the simplified SI 2026/848 regime and instead requires full MCS-style certification, building control notification, and electrician sign-off.

What does 800W of plug-in solar actually generate?

In a typical UK year, 800W of south-facing panels at a reasonable tilt produces around 750-900 kWh. At current average electricity prices that is roughly £185-£225 worth of generation, most of which you consume directly at home. Government research estimated average savings of around £70-£110 a year once you account for the share of generation that happens when no one is home to use it.

4. How a microinverter connects to your ring main

A plug-in solar microinverter converts the DC output from your panel into 230V 50Hz AC and feeds it into your ring main via the socket it is plugged into. Current flowing from the microinverter offsets whatever your home would otherwise draw from the grid at that moment. If your home is consuming 500W and the microinverter is producing 400W, your grid draw drops to roughly 100W. If production exceeds consumption, the surplus flows out through your meter into the grid: you are not entitled to Smart Export Guarantee payments for this without a separately registered export arrangement.

5. Position your panels sensibly

South-facing at around 30-35 degrees from horizontal gives the best annual output in the UK. East or west-facing is a workable alternative: you lose around 15-20% of annual output but you may capture more morning or evening generation when household consumption is actually higher. Avoid any position where shadows fall across the panel for more than a short period around midday in summer, as even partial shading on a small panel drops output significantly. For balcony or garden-mounted panels, check that your mounting structure can handle wind loads: a panel acting as a sail in a gale puts real forces on whatever it is fixed to.

For renters or those who cannot make structural changes, a plug-in kit is often the only solar option available.
